What You'll Learn
The dance portions of floor exercise routines often look like afterthoughts. Athletes tumble beautifully, then wave their arms around until it's time to tumble again. Judges notice. Choreography accounts for a significant portion of your artistic score.
This isn't about becoming a professional dancer. It's about understanding musicality, body lines, and how to move across the floor with intention. We analyze what separates forgettable routines from memorable ones at the competitive level.
Musical Structure and Movement
Your routine needs to match your music in obvious ways. Big musical accents should align with powerful movements or landing moments. Subtle musical phrases can be expressed through hand gestures or head movements. Most gymnasts ignore these details because no one taught them to listen critically.
You'll learn to count music in phrases, not just beats. A routine set to counts of eight feels robotic. Working with musical phrases that might be six or ten counts creates more interesting choreography that looks natural.
We also address the practical challenges. How do you travel from one corner to another without it looking like you're just running? What do you do with your arms during transitions that isn't generic or repetitive? These questions have specific technical answers.
